The national team of Iceland supported the concerns of people with Parkinson's disease as part of the "Sons of Solidarity" campaign on the occasion of its friendly match against Ghana on 7 June in preparation for the World Cup. gridscale, the European pioneer of IaaS and PaaS, supports the initiative with technical infrastructure.

Instead of their own names, which usually end in -son, the players of Iceland wore the name Parkinson on their jerseys during their friendly match against Ghana. Together with Parkinson's patients they entered the square and initiated the start of a fundraising campaign, the heart of which is the Sons of Solidarity website. The Cologne-based company gridscale provides the technical infrastructure for the campaign. As an expert in infrastructure and platform-as-a-service (IaaS and PaaS), gridscale specializes in intercepting traffic peaks and scaling particularly powerful infrastructure quickly and flexibly in real time when required. The Internet campaign thus remains accessible even with high and short-term inquiry loads - as during the international match. It became visible how essential this can be in TV shows such as "The Lion's Cave" (German "Shark Tank"), where gridscale saved many start-ups from being unable to satisfy their website traffic at the decisive moment.

Campaign wants to achieve better understanding of the disease

In a pro bono campaign, the cloud service provider is now using this expertise for the benefit of the Parkinson's campaign of the Icelandic football association KSÍ and the Parkinson's Foundation Parkinsonsamtökin. The national players become ambassadors who draw attention to the concerns of Parkinson's patients. The background to this cross-border campaign is the above-average incidence of the neurodegenerative disease in Iceland. The country ranks second in global statistics and has the second highest mortality rate from Parkinson's disease. Trembling, tense muscles and slowed movements - the symptoms of the most common nervous disease are common. But what is often underestimated and is not present in public is the high number of younger people affected. The disease does not only affect elderly people. The campaign therefore also wants to create a better understanding of the disease and attention to the concerns of the younger generation.

Henrik Hasenkamp, CEO of gridscale is pleased to support the action of the Icelandic team that played its way into the hearts of football fans around the globe at the 2016 European Championships: "We are impressed by the Icelanders' sense of solidarity and are taking the opportunity to support them with our know-how. Although Parkinson's is not yet fully curable, patients should receive the best possible support and acceptance."
